The more I learn about Western Riding, the more fascinated I become. It never ceases to amaze me just how little it takes to control a horse, subtle weight shifts are all that are needed to change both speed and direction, or even to stop a horse dead.
I also love the practicality of it all, being able to open and shut a gate without getting my feet muddy and to control a horses movements, forwards, backwards and sideways, easily and without question.
Of course all this doesn’t happen by magic, neither does it happen overnight. Western Riding very quickly becomes much more than a different form of equitation, it becomes a way of life. It doesn’t take too long to realise that a Western Trained horse is simply safer, not only to ride but just to be around
